Tony Thomas

Tony Thomas (Choreographer) is a New York based director, choreographer, and interior architect working in a wide range of arts and entertainment mediums since his youth. Growing up within an entertainment-based family, his international travels and residencies have exposed him to intriguing cultural practices and art forms, framing the artist and designer we see today. Tony was trained and groomed under the likes of Debbie Allen, Shawn Cosby, and Mike Malone, while working with Broadway’s David Saint and Joey McKneely, Steven Nachamie, Christopher Huggins, Tony Powell, Dancing with The Stars’ Jeffon Avin, and many others. Tony delivers innovation in dance from his core strengths in Ballet, Modern, Latin, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Contemporary, and Musical Theatre. His directing technique involves movement, gesture-work, creative staging, and detailed character development – ultimately driving the story through visual interest. Always aiming to redefine the wisdom and artistry of the legends, Tony’s expressive style and pedagogy enforces focus, fluidity, innovation, and precision in the arts and entertainment industry.

Some of his theatre credits include Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed (2023 HH Award for Outstanding Production – TYA), P.Nokio (2023 HH Award Nomination for Outstanding Production – TYA), The Freshest Snow Whyte, and You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown (2019 HH Award for Outstanding Production – TYA) at Imagination Stage; Good Bones, People Places and Things, White NoiseFlow, Pass Over, and P.Y.G. (2020 HH Award Nomination for Outstanding Choreography in a Play) at Studio Theatre; In the Middle of the Fields at Solas Nua; Native Son at Mosaic Theater Company; as well as Mysticism & MusicThe Last Five YearsThe Caucasian Chalk Circle, and Aida at Constellation Theatre. 

 

A few performance credits include West Side Story National Tour, Guys & Dolls, and A Chorus Line (2014 HH Award for Outstanding Musical Production) at Olney Theatre Center, the American Pops Concert series, and in the Fringe Festival Tony starred as Renell Gonsalves in Paul Gonsalves on the Road, alongside renowned jazz saxophonist, David Yarborough. In education, Tony has also worked with ATMTC Academy, Strathmore Children’s Chorus, Levine Music Theatre Productions, Landon School for Boys, Connelly School of the Holy Child, Georgetown Prep, Holton-Arms School, and actively leads numerous workshops, privates, and artist coaching circuits between New York, DC, Texas, and Los Angeles. Tony Thomas Designs was developed in 2004, featuring Tio Diaz Studio as a premiere design house in Interior Architecture and Creative Direction.
