Troilus and Cressida - Act 5, scene 8Act 5, scene 8
⌜Scene 8⌝
Synopsis:
Thersites comments on the combat between Menelaus and Paris. Then, surprised by Priam’s bastard son, Thersites escapes by refusing to fight.
Enter Thersites; ⌜then⌝ Menelaus ⌜fighting⌝ Paris.THERSITES 3471 The cuckold and the cuckold-maker are at
3472 it. Now, bull! Now, dog! Loo, Paris, loo! Now, my
3473 ⌜double-horned⌝ Spartan! Loo, Paris, loo! The bull
3474 has the game. Ware horns, ho!
Paris and Menelaus exit, ⌜fighting.⌝
Enter Bastard.
BASTARD 3475 5Turn, slave, and fight.
THERSITES 3476 What art thou?
BASTARD 3477 A bastard son of Priam’s.
THERSITES 3478 I am a bastard too. I love bastards. I am
3479 bastard begot, bastard instructed, bastard in mind,
3480 10 bastard in valor, in everything illegitimate. One
3481 bear will not bite another, and wherefore should
3482 one bastard? Take heed: the quarrel’s most ominous
3483 to us. If the son of a whore fight for a whore,
3484 he tempts judgment. Farewell, bastard.⌜He exits.⌝
BASTARD 3485 15The devil take thee, coward!
He exits.
